On
June 9, 1863, Union horsemen surprised General J.E.B. Stuart,
C.S.A. in an early morning attack that culminated in the
largest cavalry engagement of the war. Tour 1 begins with
an inside tour of the Graffiti House (above) and includes
stops at Auburn-to view the site of Stuart's Grand Review,
Buford's Knoll, the St. James Church area, and Fleetwood
Hill (3 hours).
Tour
number 2 follows the movement of the Union troops that crossed
at Kelly's Ford and includes and overview of the Battle
of Kelly's Ford as well as stops at the ford, Hansborough's
Ridge, Stevensburg, and the site of Will Farley's mortal
wounding (2.5-3 hours). These two tours can be combined
for an all-day tour. For groups of 35 or more, it may be
possible to include an inside tour of a historic home.
